Powering Banking Innovation with 24/7 Support and a Disruptive Spirit Since 1996

At OpenSys, we keep our clients’ systems and businesses running through thick and thin. To do that, we rely on a trinity of excellence: exceptional people, innovative solutions, and world-class support services. Today, we have a mature nationwide support infrastructure with 26 centres across West and East Malaysia. From our humble beginnings in 1996, we have grown to over 400 highly skilled employees. As our story shows, we are never afraid to disrupt ourselves before others do. Our strategy is to collaborate with our clients to disrupt the disruptors because transformation is in our DNA. Across nearly three decades, our philosophy of excellence, innovation, and trust has remained steadfast. We believe that better people – not necessarily more people – lead to great ideas and exceptional products.

Overcoming Challenges and Emerging Stronger Post-Pandemic

Yes, we grew and grew – until the Covid-19 pandemic slowed us down. Like many others, we faced challenges, but we emerged relatively unscathed. Our services became essential, ensuring our clients’ businesses remained operational for the benefit of all. Post-pandemic, we recovered quickly, and in 2022, we proudly transferred to Bursa Malaysia’s Main Market – a milestone achievement that reflected our resilience and continued growth.

Expanding with Cash Recycling ATM Technology

We secured our first bank client, and since then, we have partnered with 6 major banks that now use our cash recycling ATM technology. And we continued to grow – steadily and confidently.

Pioneering Cash Recycling Technology in Malaysian Banking

When we were riding the wave of cheque technology, the last thing we wanted to hear was that the central bank intended to discourage its use! Once again, it was a choice: adapt or be left behind. After much brainstorming, we concluded that cash was still king – or rather, cash recycling was king. We partnered with a Japanese firm that was a global leader in cash recycling ATM technology. At the time, Malaysia’s banks used two separate machines: one for ATM withdrawals and another for deposits. We developed an application from scratch that could connect these separate systems – and voilà! a new cash recycling market was born.

Dominating the Market with Innovative Deposit Solutions

Cheque truncation was the industry trend, and we were ready early. We captured the market with 8 banks in Malaysia and 2 more in Thailand and Brunei, which still use our solutions today. If you’ve ever used an intelligent cheque deposit kiosk or a cheque scanning terminal, chances are it was one of ours.

From Mesdaq Listing to Innovating Bill Payment and Cheque Truncation Systems

After that major success, we listed our company on Mesdaq (now known as the ACE Market of Bursa Malaysia) to raise funds for business expansion. We then began developing bill payment kiosks that allowed non-banking organisations – including utility, insurance, and telecommunications companies – to automate their bill payment collections. At the same time, we built a paperless, image-based cheque truncation system, using front-end scanner devices and software applications to capture cheque images and data at bank branches before sending them directly to the central bank for straight-through clearing and settlement. It was technical, complex – and incredibly exciting.

From Printer App to Self-Service Kiosks for Cheque Deposit Receipts

Remember the app we created to let users print cheques? We transformed it into self-service kiosks that printed cheque images on deposit receipts – an industry game-changer! With printed cheque images as proof of deposit, banks could resolve disputes quickly and efficiently.

Building Innovative Insurance Apps and Achieving Success

Undaunted by piracy, we pressed on. One of our key strengths was our ability to design, develop, roll out, and market our own software. We started creating more complex applications, beginning with insurance apps to help users renew motor insurance and process personal claims – our first major commercial success!

From Malay Spellchecker to Interactive Learning, Despite Facing Piracy Challenges

Our first steps in software development began with Eja Tepat, the first Malay spellchecker. This was followed by myCheque, a personal finance assistant that allowed users to print cheques, and Bibi & Bobo, an interactive educational programme for preschool children. Unfortunately, our innovations fell victim to piracy and were soon found at the heart of Malaysia’s piracy capital – Imbi Plaza.

Supporting Major Multinational ATM and POS Deployments

Starting small with just 10 people, we truly believed that the quality of staff would always triumph over quantity. Our first major project arrived soon after – providing software support for a large American multinational supplying ATMs and POS equipment to banks and retailers.
